Course contents :
 |
| The course is divided into two main parts. It will focus on the one hand on written communication in English with a revision of the English grammar, and on the other hand on oral communication. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
 |
| In agreement with the ILOs, the course aims at developing and strengthening the four language skills (oral and written expression, listening and reading comprehension). The objective is to help the students who do not have a sufficient level of English (or who haven't studied English for some time), to reach the B2 level (the required level to attend the course English part 2). |

| Students must have a B1 level at least. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |
| The course particularly insists on practising English.
The oral communication course will propose listening and speaking activities thanks to discussions, role plays, presentations and case studies. Vocabulary activities will also be done.
In the written communication course, the students' assignments will serve as a basis for the revision of the grammar.
The reading comprehension skill will be developed in both parts of the course (the texts read in class will be the basis for discussions and writing exercises). |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

| The course is taught face-to-face, with 4h a week (2x2h).
Students are required to prepare some exercises at home. |

| The grammatical theory and the exercises, as well as the notes on the writing skills and on the oral communication skills are to be found in the syllabus "APM: English (part one)", which will be available at the Centrale.
Extra notes will be given in class by the professor.

Assessment methods and criteria :

| Oral communication course: 50% of the total mark
- in-class assessment (a presentation and a case study): 5%
- January exam: case study and listening comprehension: 45%
Written communication course: 50% of the total mark
- in-class assessment (a summary written in class): 5%
- January exam: a summary and an essay based on a newspaper article: 45% |

| The course is organised in two sessions of two hours during the first semester.
The students who attend this course will have to take the course English part two during the second (instead of the first) semester. |
