Course contents :

| This B2-C1 CEFR level ESP course continues the development of reading, data gathering, and note-taking using texts or sets of texts (as started in the English Level A course).
It also focuses on research and report-writing capacities, oral understanding and presentation skills. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| At the end of this course the students will be able to:
- read and fully understand English scientific papers,
- understand and take accurate notes of oral presentations in English,
- present scientific information in correct and consistent English,
- analyse and discuss scientific data.

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
|
| English Level A (taught in first year of the Bachelor's Degree in Engineering - B1-B2 CEFR level) or equivalent (for example: IELTS 5.5-6 or Cambridge Advanced English A-C). |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
|
| The course features a dozen fortnightly classes (duration: 2 hours).
Each class requires a long preparation which is essential and mandatory. There are no ex cathedra lectures but rather language workshops in which students will be asked to take part regularly and actively.
Together, active participation, oral presentations and written assignments during the year account for 35% of the final grade. |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
|
| Students are gathered in the TP physique building in the first week of the academic year. The groups are formed ; the schedules, assignments and venues are communicated on Thursday 18th September 2014.
Presence on 18th September is compulsory. |

Recommended or required readings :
|
| English for Engineering (2014-2015) course notes are compulsory.
The first chapters (Basic functions and Vocabulary for Engineering), which are compulsory course contents, are self-study chapters. The knowledge of the scientific vocabulary is verified through several tests on eCampus.
Students will also have to do Practice Units on eCampus, one on oral presentations during the first quarter (before Christmas), and another on visual aids during the second quarter (before Easter). |

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
| Continuous assessment based on the eCampus modules, class attendance and active participation and on compulsory oral présentations, video clips and written assignments.
Oral exam (based on the workshops) and written exam in June (with multiple choice questions on a video and a sight text presenting new information on one of the subjects discussed in class, and several written tasks).
Students will have to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the scientific vocabulary, their ability to read and understand a wide selection of scientific papers in English (global and detailed understanding), to do research on and present scientific information in a consistent way. They will also have to demonstrate an ability to accurately understand data presented orally.
Course attendance is compulsory. The students who will be absent in more than 30% of the classes will not be allowed to take the exams and will be considered "Absent". |
