| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Bernard Boigelot |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the second semester |
Course contents :
| This course covers the following subjects: Elementary notions on digital circuits (logic gates, combinatorial and sequential circuits) and Boolean logic, binary representation of numbers (signed and unsigned integers, reals), main hardware components of a computer (processor, memory, communication buses, ...), instructions and their execution, assembly language, assembly programming. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| At the end of this course, students will have acquired a good understanding of the principles of operation of computers. They will be able to design simple digital circuits implementing elementary data processing operations, and will master the principles of the computer representations of integer and real numbers while understanding their limitations. Students will also have acquired a good understanding of the main components of a computer, in particular of the processor and its internal structure. They will finally be able to develop simple programs written in assembly language. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| None. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
- Theoretical lessons introducing the subjects of the course.
- Exercise sessions aimed at applying these subjects to actual problems. The exercises are available beforehand, in order to be prepared by the students. Correction of those exercises is done collectively or individually during the sessions.
- Additional exercises and self-evaluation tools are available on the WWW page of the course.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
- Theoretical lessons are given by the professor in a large auditorium.
- Exercice sessions are animated by assistants and by student helpers, and are done in small groups.
