Course contents :
  • Pipe and reservoir networks
  • Pressurized flow
  • Hydraulic equipment (pumps, flow measurement, ...)
  • Basic principles of open-channel flow
  • Uniform flow
  • Gradually varied flow
  • Hydraulic jump
Learning outcomes of the course :
(1) To confer the competences necessary to understand and regulate fluid transport in pipe networks.
(2) To teach the principles governing open channel flow
After following this course, students should be able to
  • Design and regulate pipe flow or open channel flow networks with/without reservoirs and hydraulic equipment such as pumps, valves, ...
  • Compute the volume flow rate delivered by a channel as a function of its water depth.
  • Identify and design modifications necessary to improve the fluid transport capacity of a channel.
  • Calculate the evolution of water depth over the whole length of a channel.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
  • General mathematics (1st and 2nd part)
  • General physics
  • Mechanics
  • Applied fluid mechanics
