The work of Master 1 sociology consists of a written text of 20 pages maximum where the student will have to treat a sociological question in a manner towards a synthesis.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The objective of the written work of Master 1 is to prepare oneself to write the future Master’s thesis at the end of the studies. In particular, the student will prepare himself/herself:
- to pose a research question (« problematization »)
- to build a minimum bibliography (and respect the rules of coherence of bibliographic reference)
- to present the research question with an introduction, development and conclusion.
Ideally (but not necessarily), the work of Master 1 should prepare to the Master’s thesis and so focus on the same or a close subject. The student can derive benefit from this work
- by a first exploration of the available material on the future subject of the Master’s thesis.
- by preparing the data collection for this thesis (and in particular thinking about the best method).
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Recommended or required readings :
Assessment methods and criteria :
Will be assessed:
- the pertinence of the research question
- the pertinence of the (theoretical and empirical) sources that were used to answer it
- the coherence and the rigour of the proposed argumentation
- the quality of French (clarity and correction of grammar and spelling)
Work placement(s) :
Organizational remarks :
The work will be carried out under the direction of a mentor (in French “promoteur”), a teacher or trainer of the ISHS Institute (academic or scientific). It is up to the student to contact the person(s) who could supervise his/her work and to conclude an agreement with his/her mentor about the subject of the work and the manner to treat it.
It is the mentor who will assess the written work according to the general criteria of this pedagogical commitment, but also more specific objectives that will be given to the student.
The student has to respect the time limits of the official schedule of the ISHS, otherwise his/her written work will be declared non admissible.
Contacts :
Contact person is the mentor. In case of difficulty to find a “promoteur”, please contact the President of the Jury of Master 1 in sociology: Marc.Jacquemain@ulg.ac.be
