Course contents :
| Given the importance of Ancient Egypt - and of Ancient Egyptian Art - among the founding references of modern occidental culture and the commonly accepted idea that "when you have seen an Ancient Egyptian temple, you have seen them all » (G. Flaubert), the course is structured in two parts, of different length:
- - a synchronic and theoretical approach, aiming to explain the very strong formal (as well as functional) identity that characterizes what we are nowadays used to call art in the Ancient Egyptian context and that justifies this impression of immutability;
- - a diachronic approach, that deals with the 6 millennia of existence of the Ancient Egyptian material culture, with particular focus on the dynamics that induced this evolution
Learning outcomes of the course :
| The course is structured around two objectives:
- - understanding and distinguishing the different phases of the evolution of the Ancient Egyptian material (and visual) culture during the 6 millennia of its existence;
- - understanding the identity of this material and visual culture, its own characteristics, that define it with such a coherence and consistency that nowadays, anybody is able to recognize an Ancient Egyptian work as such.
