DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

The digital revolution has entered a new phase, stronger and more disruptive. It will radically redefine the criteria of territorial competitiveness, quality of services and well-being. Families, companies, public services, schools, health or culture, the shift to digital is now on for every sector. It will be fast, sometimes brutal.

After writing and printing, many people see in digital the third major shift in the history of mankind.

Companies and organizations must start a deep reflection on their digital transformation (business models, marketing, training, work organization and human resources, relationships with customers, partners and suppliers, research and development, information technology and communication networks, ...)

The main goal of the course is to decrypt the "digital transformation", to understand its issues and to identify its opportunities, especially for businesses and organizations.

The course will be structured according to four main technological themes whose interaction acts as a catalyst for this digital transformation:

  • Cloud computing. It provides technology resources, unlimited development power and storage capacity, available on demand, sufficient to start or run a business. The Cloud is the platform of the digital transformation;
  • Big / Open Data. Global, relevant and customizable, their activation and the development of analytics will allow us to anticipate trends or to consider problems from a new point of view. Data are the fuel of the digital transformation;
  • Mobile. With the smartphones, tablets and, more and more, connected objects, mobile technologies provide a permanent connectivity and interactivity, removing the boundaries between real and virtual worlds. Mobile is the vehicle of the digital transformation;
  • Empowerment. Based on social technologies, the empowerment modifies the balance between forces in our traditionally pyramidal organizations. The Empowerment is the man driving the digital transformation.
Every year a specific theme will be used as a red line for the course. For 2014/2015, it will be the sharing economy, well known through services like Airbnb, Uber, crowdsourcing / funding ...

This is not a technical or computing course. The approach will be to understand the challenges and opportunities of the digital transformation.

Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of the course, students will be able to :
  • know and understand the challenges and opportunities of the digital transformation for enterprises and organizations;
  • identify the major ICT trends and developments;
  • manage digital projects;
  • use ICT tools for technological watch.
The course will offer a true digital "empowerment" for the students. At the end, it can also push more students to choose thesis topics directly related to ICT.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
None.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course will include three types of activities.
  • Traditional clases, organized on the basis of thematic modules.
  • 2 or 3 lectures by professionals. For 2014/2015, 3 conferences are already scheduled (a Web startup, a gobal ICT company and the RTBF).
  • Light group works to prepare some of the thematic modules, and a bigger group work based on a scenario (in 2013/2014, it was to think about a "sharing economy like" mobile application or Web site within HEC).
Students will have to use interactive and collaboration tools (RSS feeds, email alerts, sharing tools Web 2.0, etc.).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
See above "Planned learning activities and teaching methods"
Recommended or required readings :
The book by Gilles Babinet, "The digital age, a new age for mankind" will be used as a reference. An executive summary will be distributed to students.

"Digital Champion" for France, he argues that the digital revolution will represent a "major paradigm break for mankind. The global distribution of knowledge and health technologies, the emergence of robotics, the changing size of the States, are some of the basic concepts that will change of our future".

The course will be supported by "Powerpoint" presntations and multimedia contents, available online on Lol@. It will also offer a wide range of websites, blogs, newsletters, etc. The objective is to provide scalable and evolutive supports that students will use even in their future professional world. The idea of a virtual community based on social networks will also be considered.

All supports will always refer to case studies, testimonials from companies and reference personalities in the world of ICT.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The group works and the reports based on the 3 conferences will be evaluated.

The organization of a written exam will be decided in the middle of the course, depending on the global required volume of work.
Work placement(s) :
Organizational remarks :
10 classes are planned:
  • 6 or 7 will be performed by André Blavier (including external conferences).
  • 2 or 3 by Eric Vyncke.
  • Alain Dubois will propose a session on ethical aspects of digital technologies (with an expert).
