Course contents :

| Through their distinctive roles and organizational forms, social enterprises deal with specific governance and human resource management (HRM) challenges. These domains examine the contribution of people within and around the organization to the goals and strategies. This course aims to understand the how social enterprises experience governance (Board, general assembly, etc.) and HRM models (recruiting, evaluation, training, volunteering, etc.). Some contextual elements are also reviewed to understand the constraints affecting governance and HRM in the context of social enterprises (nonprofits, co-operatives and other forms). |

Learning outcomes of the course :
 |
| In coherence with the Intended Learning Outcomes of the Master in Management program and more particularly of its specialization in "Social Enterprise Management", the course will enable students to:
- Understand and master the roles and composition of governance structures in organizations and more specifically social enterprises
- Understand and master HRM tools in the context of social enterprises
- Understand the challenges of governance and HRM in social enterprises
- Link theoretical perspectives with field realities, more particularly through analyzing the conceptual lenses to an existing case of a social enterprise and formulating concrete recommandations
This course contributes to the following Intended Learning Outcomes :
ILO-2 : Gaining the knowledge and understanding of one of the proposed fields of concentration or to gain deep knowledge in the field of the management being already specialized through a first University Master Degree.
ILO-4 : To acquire the capacity to research autonomously and methodically the information needed to solve a complex, transversal management problem,
ILO-5 : Integrate autonomously researched information, tools, knowledge and context to build and propose, either individually or as part of a team, original, creative and viable solutions to concrete complex management problems, whether real or simulated, taking into account, when necessary, the human, social and legal context.

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| A course of organization theory or human resource management.
A minimal level of familiarity with the social economy |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |
| The course is composed of 10 x 3h classes, taught in English or in French depending on the topics and invited guests. For each part (governance and HRM), theoretical classes will introduce the topic, before spending more time meeting field realities thanks to experts from the social enterprise field. |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

| The course is given face-to-face and requires active participation from the students. The course is supported by Powerpoint slides and recommended readings, all of which are available on the Lol@ platform (lola.hec.ulg.ac.be). |

Recommended or required readings :

| A set of recommended readings is given each year and made available on Lol@ (lola.hec.ulg.ac.be) in order to help the students to:
- better understand the theoretical and conceptual elements presented during the classes
- prepare the group work
- prepare the final exam |

Assessment methods and criteria :
 |
| The evaluation will consist of different elements:
- the active participation in the classes (20%)
- a group work based on the analysis of two governance and HRM problems/challenges in a particular social enterprise, including recommandations (40%)
- a written exam (40%) |
