Course contents :
|
| The course begins with an introduction to the linguistic implications of English colonisation and the history of the former English territories where English is now spoken ; there is also a brief introduction to the linguistic terminology used in this course (e.g. creole, pidgin, etc). The course then covers the specific features (vocabulary, grammar, spelling and pronunciation) of the African, Caribbean and Australian varieties of English, starting from authentic documents (both written and oral) and concentrating on their socio-historical context. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| Upon completion of the course, student will have acquired the theoretical bases necessary to an understanding of linguistic variation, especially in the Anglophone world. They will also have an overview of the linguistic situation of the territories that make up the Commonwealth. |
