GERE0021-1  Theory of structural calculations

Duration :  36h Th, 36h Pr
Number of credits :
Master in Environmental Bioengineering, Professional Focus, 1st year6
Lecturer :  Pierre Latteur
Substitute(s) :  Laurent Duchene, Jean-Marc Franssen, Vincent Denoël
Coordinator :  N...
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
This course includes : calculation of the degree of redundancy of a structure, solving of hyperstatic structures (method of forces and method of displacements), supports movements, trusses, arches, influence lines.
This course also contains a group project. The project consists in programming a calculation software based on the method of displacements to solve a particular structural problem.
Learning outcomes of the course :
This course is a continuity of the course of Strength of Materials and Elasticity INGE0001 and aims to achieve the student's knowledge in the field of Structural Engineering and in mechanics.
The project's aim is mostly to teach the principles of the displacement method to the students.
After completing this course the student is expected to be able to:
- Calculate and better understand the flows of forces in the isostatic and hyperstatic structures.
- Understand and use the displacement method
- Program with a good knowledge of algorithmic, the ability to code the different parts of the solving strategy, the treatment of the results and the graphics.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
The following courses (or equivalent) are prerequisites:
- INGE0001: Strength of Materials and elasticity - MECA0490: Solid Mechanics
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
All the forecast hours are hold by the professor himself in auditorium. Generally, each course takes place as following:
- Short remind of the previous courses - Exercises solved and commented on the blackboard by the professor and discussed with the students - 10 minutes break - Continuation of the theory with the help of a Powerpoint slide show
For the classes related to the project, the teacher will take the needed hours:
- To explain the basics of the displacement method
- To remind the basics of programming in Visual Basic
- To supervise the student's work at each step of their project
- The rest is planed for the student's own group work.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Lectures : 36h Practical Works (project included): 36h
Recommended or required readings :
"Calculer une structure, de la théorie à l'exemple", Editions Aademia Buylant, Louvain-la-Neuve, ISBN 2-87209-843-7, Pierre Latteur, 488 pages. (http://www.issd.be/Lelivre.php)
Assessment methods and criteria :
A written examination with books closed will consist in solving exercises (2/3 of the final mark).
The project (1/3 of the final mark) will be evaluated on the basis of a report and an oral presentation (for the group).
