GEOP0010-1  Soil quality evaluation

Duration :  18h Th, 18h Pr
Number of credits :
Master in Environmental Bioengineering, Professional Focus, 1st year3
Lecturer :  Gilles Colinet, Aurore Degré, Sarah Garré
Coordinator :  N...
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
The course aims at deepen the knowledge developped during General hydrology, edaphology, and soil hydrodynamic courses. It is mainly based on applications both on field and on computers. The objective is that the students apply major measurement and data minning technics largely used in hydrology in order to improve their mastery.
The course includes - measurement of different major hydrological variables (gauging, ...) - Hydropedological measurements on field and in the lab (retention curves, hydraulic conductivity, ...) - Data treatments (error detection, statistics of extremes, ...)
Learning outcomes of the course :
After completing the course, the student will reach a basic to intermediate level in the differents steps of the following comptence : "to conceive and put into practice strategies of environmental remediation".
More particularly, at the end of the course, the student will be able to
- measure different hydrological variables (selection of the technic, application and results interpretation) - measure different hydropedological parameters (selection of the technic, application and results interpretation) - test, validate or -if necessary- correct hydrological data; - use these data to gain useful information and discuss the results.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
General Hydrology Water movement in soils
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Indoor workshop (30%)

Outdoor workshop (70%)
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Practical Works : 24h
Recommended or required readings :
Slideshowsavailable on eCampus
Assessment methods and criteria :
Field manipulations are realised in small groups (3-4 students). Each group is asked to provide a report. The report's evaluation is applied to all the group's members. Computer exercices are individual and lead to individual reports.
For one of the group manipulations, the deliverable is a video which is assessed collectively.
The final note includes all the evaluations. There is no examination during the session.
Delay on the reports delivery leads to penalties on the final note.
Work placement(s) :
Organizational remarks :
Attendance is compulsory for all activities. In case of absence, a penalty on the final note is applied.
