GEOL0303-1  Geomagnetism and environmental magnetism

Duration :  15h Th, 5h Pr
Number of credits :
Master in Geology, Research Focus, 1st year3
Master in Geological Sciences3
Lecturer :  Anne-Christine Da Silva
Language(s) of instruction :
English language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
The course will start with basic notion of magnetism and earth magnetic fields. Geological applications of magnetic remanence techniques will be assessed briefly (paleogeographic reconstructions and magnetostratigraphy). An important portion of the course will concern environmental magnetism and use of magnetic susceptibility for correlations: principle, advantages and experimental techniques.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Introduction to geomagnetism basics. Overview of various applications of magnetism for earth Sciences and environmental research. Main techniques to identify the origin of the magnetic signal in a rock (magnetic mineralogy).
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Basics of magnetism from first year of science. General geology and sedimentology basics.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lecture with slideshow. Use of laboratory devices, magnetic data processing (computer, mostly Excel)
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-Face. Lectures and practical course B18/B20
Recommended or required readings :
Walden, J., Oldfield, F., Smith, J. (eds.) Environmental Magnetism, a practical guide. Quaternary Research Association, Technical Guide No. 6., p139-164, 1999
