GEOL0206-3  Geochemistry

Duration :  30h Th
Number of credits :
Bachelor in geological sciences, 3rd year2
Lecturer :  Jacqueline Vander Auwera
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, examination in June
Course contents :
Following an introduction to the early differentiation of the Earth, the first part of the course is devoted to the tools of geochemistry (trace elements, isotopic geochemistry). In the second part, the successive parts of the Earth (core, mantle, continental and oceanic crusts, oceans) are successively studied using the informations and constraints provided by geochemistry.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The intent of this course is to introduce the students to geochemistry.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Reference is being made to notions of thermodynamics and chemistry (CHIM0084-1, PHYS2007-1, INFO0205-1) as well as to the topics provided in the course on "Theoretical petrology" (GEOL0026-2) and "Cristallography and Mineralogy" (GEOL0005-4). The courses of "Tectonics" (GEOL0029-5),  "Mineralogy and Radiocristallography" (MINE0201-3) and of "Magmatic and metamorphic petrology" (GEOL0016-1) are co-requisites.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
15 lectures of 2H in which exercises are included.
Recommended or required readings :
Notes provided during the lectures.
