Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
The course includes the following topics: composition and nomenclature of magmatic rocks (Streckeisen, chemical classification of volcanic rocks, CIPW norm); graphical representation of mineral parageneses and reactions; Schreinemakers rules; binary and ternary phase diagrams.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The course aims at providing a basic knowledge for critical interpretation of magmatic and metamorphic phase diagrams.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Reference is being made to the basic principles of chemical thermodynamics and geology (GEOL0202-2).

Co-requisites courses:
Physical chemistry (CHIM0084-1)
Cristallography and mineralogy (GEOL0005-4)
Physics II (PHYS2007-1)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
7 labs of 2H are devoted to the use of the nomenclature of magmatic rocks, to exercises on graphical representation of mineral parageneses and to the critical use of binary and ternary phase diagrams.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
7 lectures of 2H each associated with 8 labs of 2H. A one day fieldtrip is scheduled.
