GEOL0005-4  Crystallography and Mineralogy

Duration :  30h Th, 50h Pr, 3d FW
Number of credits :
Bachelor in geological sciences, 2nd year8
Lecturer :  Frédéric Hatert
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
All year long
Course contents :
This course concerns the basics of Mineralogy, for students in BAC2 Geology. The main chaptes are:
1. Geometric crystallography.
2. Optical crystallography.
3. Crystal chemistry.
4. Macroscopic identification of minerals.
Learning outcomes of the course :
This course has a double goal: (I) understand the morphology, the crystal structure, and the chemical composition of mineral; and (II) identify minerals in hand samples or with the polarizing microscope (transmitted and reflected lights).
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
For this course, prerequisite basic knowledges are necessary (level BAC1): mathematics, trigonometry, physics, optics, and inorganic chmistry.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Numerous hours of practical identification of minerals under the microscope. The macroscopic identification of minerals is not included in the hours mentioned in the programm of this course (personal supplementary training).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face learning. It is absolutely necessary to attend all practicals.
Recommended or required readings :
The cours is available on-line.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Examinations in June. Oral examination for theory. 3 practical examinations for microscopy, macroscopic identifcation, and for crystallography.
No partial dispenses at examinations.
Work placement(s) :
3 days of field-trip are organized in the Eifel region, Germany.
Organizational remarks :
Laptops, tablets and mobile phones forbidden.
