Course contents :  
This seminar aims to equip doctoral students with theoretical and methodological skills for doing research in the field of social enterprise and social entrepreneurship. The seminar will trace social entrepreneurship research back to different approaches in economics, entrepreneurship and organization theory. Based on the critical analysis of theoretical and empirical articles, students will get acquainted with several research avenues in the field. They will then be asked to locate their own research project regarding the extant literature and to discuss their upcoming research agenda with the teachers and the other students.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
In coherence with the Intended Learning Outcomes of the Doctoral Program in Management Sciences, the course will enable students to:
-       Acquire an overview of the extant literature in social entrepreneurship
-       Be able to connect the various strands of this literature with the broader research avenues and paradigms in management sciences
-       Develop critical thinking on research development and paper writing in particular
-       Develop their research project in the awareness of the available options and locate it on the « research map » of social entrepreneurship (if adequate) and management sciences in general
 
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
All doctoral students interested in the topic (from any university) are welcome. A previous class in nonprofit or social economy/enterprise/entrepreneurship is useful but not compulsory.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Methods :

Readings, presentations by the teachers and invited scholars, and interactive group discussions introduced by a student (all in English)

Structure of the sessions :

12am-2pm: Seminar in Management (invited scholar) - open to anyone interested
2-2.30pm: Introduction by a PhD student: Theoretical positioning of the research and observed or potential empirical applications to social entrepreneurship
2.30-4pm: Open discussion with scholars and students
4-5pm: Final remarks and advices (teachers and invited scholar)
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
The course is taught face-to-face and entirely in English during seven half-days between February and May (dates set at the latest in January).

Recommended readings are made available on the Lol@ platform (lola.hec.ulg.ac.be).
Assessment methods and criteria :  
20% (individual) reading of the articles and in-class participation 40% (group) post-seminar discussion and presentation of theoretical positioning and empirical applications 10% (group) summary of scholar presentation for the EMES Junior Experts' Blog (http://emesphdnetwork.wordpress.com/) 30% (individual) final exercise: based on what you have read and learned during this seminar, how do you connect your own research to extant theoretical perspectives, and how can it contribute to feeding the advancement of social entrepreneurship research?
