| GCIV2050-2 | Civil engineering works under accidental and exceptional actions

| Duration : | 30h Th, 20h Pr |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Hervé Degée, Jean-François Demonceau, Vincent Denoël, Jean-Marc Franssen, Michel Pirotton |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the first semester, review in January |
Course contents :
| The course is divided into three different parts having almost the same importance: design and analysis of structures in fire, under seismic loading and, with less details, under several other random actions, natural or resulting from human activity (impact, blasting, wind, floods) |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| At the end of this class, the student will able to design and analyse a structure under fire or seismic conditions. He/She will have a general knowledge of the legal frame concerning these actions on civil engineering structures. Furthermore, he/she will know the different strategies that lead to a sane structural behaviour in case of major hazard.
The lecture develops critical thinking skills and creativity with regards to the unusual load paths that have to be imagined. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| Good understanding of strength of materials and of structural mechanics. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| Some simple exercices, either demonstrated to the students or to be done by them, about eartquakes and fire. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| First semester, Thursday morning, 8:30 till 12:30 |
Recommended or required readings :
| Written notes shall be available. |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| Oral Examination. A list of subjects defining the items to study will be distributed. |
