Course contents :
| . Physical, mechanical, biological properties : - moisture content, density, hardness; - strength and stiffness; - conductivity, combustibility,... . Wood defects due to growth excess, physical agents, plants or animals and man actions. . Microdensitometry, theory and practice. . Macroscopic recognition of temperate species wood samples. . Grading rules and standards for timber . Assessment of strength and stiffness on structural wood, relationships between visual grading, strength measurement and machine stress grading. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| The students will develop a knowledge of wood characteristics including properties and defects. After completing the course the student is expected to assess wood quality by means of suitable techniques such as measurements, grading and other tests argue consequences of silviculture options on wood characteristics (spruce) recognize the most common temperate species from a wood sample. |
