Course contents :  
The course introduces...


  • first, the place of grammar within linguistics and language teaching,
  • the different kinds of grammar that are recognized and that can be used,
  • the role of grammar in teaching and learning a language,
  • the different elements and components of grammar.
The status of implicit and explicit grammar are also distinguished, in particular in the context of learning using communicative and immersion methods.
The issue of selection, (spiral) progression, (interlanguage) assimilation of grammatical content as well as that of handling mistakes.
Finally, structures and processes for teaching grammar in class will be illustrated using specific cases.
Students will analyze and prepare a grammar lesson that respects the principles of the communicative and actional approach, and the different stages and main organising principles of a lesson and a didactic sequence.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
The participants will be able to approach grammar critically, to connect it coherently with their teaching French as a foreign and second language, to prepare and create appropriate and effective language lessons.
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
  • create exercises
  • define objectives
  • integrate work with learning strategies
  • handle all macro-skills
  • choose authentic and pertinent documents
  • set up activities according to different stages
  • prepare for (self-)evaluation
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Some knowledge and/or experience in linguistics and/or teaching, as well as strong knowledge of French normative grammar.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
The participants are expected to prepare a grammar lesson, present it in front of the group and submit a written report.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
First semester, Wednesday from 12:30 am to 02:30 pm, Salle Kurth.
Recommended or required readings :  
Various bibliographic documents and references are communicated to the participants throughout the course.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
Evaluation of the preparation of, presentation of and report on the grammar lesson.
