| Lecturer : | Jean-Louis Lilien |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the first semester, review in January |
Course contents :
| Power system network have to be designed and operated to warranty a reliable power supply to every customer. Power system network links any kind of production (renewable and non renewable) and are able to help in any disturbance that may occur.
- Consumption-production balance (4h),
- Belgian power system network, interconnection (4h),
- overhead lines, cables and substations (material used, topologies, design) (8h),
- apparatuses, insulation coordination (4h),
- relay protection overview (4h)
- Corona effect (2h)
- perturbations (4h)
Technical visits (3) are planned : national dispatching, pumping station (Coo), Nuclear power station (Tihange) if possible. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| At the end of the semester, the student will be able to :
- explain to others operational bases of interconnected high voltage network
- design (roughly) power lines and cables of the transmission and distribution network
- understand the basics of relay protection, corona effect and disturbances origin and preventive means
- Apply his (her) engineering knowledge in many disciplines like mechanics, structure design, electromagnetism, circuits, to develop brainstorming in that domain. Some reports will be asked to facilitate his autonomy.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| It is required that the student is able to apply former engineering knowledge in :
- Basic lectures in electricity and circuit (Maxwell equations, electric and magnetic field, power, three-phase systems, alternator, motor, transformer).
- Thermodynamic basic knowledge (heat transfer), applied mechanics, material behaviour in traction, flexion and torsion.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| Some typical installations will be visited
- 3 visits (including the national dispatching)
- calculation of R,L, C of existing power line
- line design, underground cable design
The students must be reactive enough during the visits and will have to produce written reports on some exercices. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Ex cathedra lectures, introduction in 2012-2013 of problem based learning.
1st quadrimester, 2hours basic lectures per week, exercices by 2 or 4 hours/week |
Recommended or required readings :
| Lecture and exercices available at student organisation AEES.
Corona effect notes as well as disturbances notes are only available on the cited web site.
the books are also available on the web site www.tdee.ulg.ac.be
