Course contents :  
This course aims to develop the fundamental aspects that will provide a theoretical basis to the students who need to understand the epistemological side of the sports activities in its broader meaning. The content of the course is focused on important definitions (physical activity, sport, physical education) as the students representation need to be analyzed in order to enlarge their conception of users. The goal is to open their mind to the diversity of the professional activities existing in the "sports" field. Another priority is to let them identifying the coherence of the program that they are starting in order to improve their motivation to achieve. Among the chapters that are proposed: description of the professions related to "sport"; organization of the sports activities; evolution of the sport; analysis of the Olympic movement; role of the "sport" in the society. In the perspective to provide a concrete anchor of the course's content into the reality of the society, several original approches are implemented accross the academic year: participation of young graduates who will share their experiences; presentation of an event described by the media; group work focusing on the preparation of a report focusing on a specific problem linking sport and society; organization of debates aiming to develop expression competences.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
This course has to allow the students to better understand the ends of their studies and to help them to develop one professional project. So, at the end of the year, they must be able to identify the place of physical educator in the society and to tackle the great question with which the sport is currently confronted. This course has also to help them to improve their written and oral expressions.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
- Upstream: general knowledge regarding sport - Downstream: this course will be used as prerequisite for the partim I, II and III of the course on "Organization and management of physical and sport activities". Some others courses in BSM 2 will use the content thought in this course.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
- Ex-cathedra teaching
- Exercises in the classroom.
- Individual work (actualities).
- Group work (folder).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
The course will comprise 10 to 12 sessions each semester. Several will be organized in order to allow the students to express themselves and to interact starting from the preparation of files relating to selected topics.
Recommended or required readings :  
A pdf version of the slides and documents proposed during the theoretical lessons is posted on the Website myULg. In addition, the students will have to seek other information, according to recommendations' of the course's leader.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
An evaluation of the participation in the activities (preparation and presentation of the files) is organised during the course while a final written control of the knowledge is planned during the examination period. The details relating to the assessment tools will be brought during the first lesson.
