Language(s) of instruction :
Dutch language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
The object of this course is the analysis of some general topics concerning human rights in a European context, chosen by the teacher and the students, through an analysis of legal literature. During the first year of this course, topics included the birth of the European system of human rights and their typical characteristics, the rights of the child, and certain topics related to health rights (abortion, euthanasia, the commitment of people with mental disorders, etc.).The students themselves are asked to suggest topics.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The study and analysis of general human rights topics serves as a pretext for improving, or at least maintaining, the students' written and above all spoken level of Dutch. The course is interactive, with a smaller class promoting more intensive work. Knowledge of Dutch language skills in the field of law is as important as legal knowledge, both of which are inseparable assets in a legal course taught in Dutch.
Skills developed: take part in a conversation in another language than French in simple conversations on familiar or personal topics; understand the main points when listening to standard language and produce a simple and coherent discourse in the context of professional discussions; present a legal issue to a group using adequate legal terminology.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Minimal active knowledge of Dutch is required; otherwise the student will not be able to participate in class, where attendance is mandatory. Specific knowledge in the field of human rights is not a prerequisite.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Students are expected to have read the text that will be analysed in class, in order to participate actively.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Traditional two-hour 30 minutes lectures with the active participation of students, based on the analysis of legal literature in Dutch in human rights (legal theory). The course is offered every academic year.
Recommended or required readings :
The teacher provides students with texts that serve as the basis for discussions and analyses. Students also take notes during class.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Grading will be based on an ongoing evaluation, with emphasis on oral expression and on an individual presentation to the class of a personal "mind map" on a specific legal topic.
Work placement(s) :
Organizational remarks :
The student' attendance and participation in class are taken into account in their final mark.
