Course contents :  
The aim of this course is to provide fundamental knowledge of general criminal law in Belgium as it is currently applied by the courts.
More specifically, this course will deal with: the definition of criminal law, general principles that form the framework for this law, the sources of criminal law, Article 100 of the Criminal Code, the offence (that is the division of the offences, the elements that constitute an offence, the attempt and the objective justifications), accountability (that is the offender and the participation), subjective justifications, sanctions, concurrent offences, recidivism, punishment, measures, sentencing, obstacles to execution of the sentence, and disappearance of indictments

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
The 30-hr. course will comprise lectures and tutorials.

A syllabus and a case book will be available to the students.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
The examination will be oral and divided into two parts. The first part will deal with the theory and the second will be based on the practical exercises.

Organizational remarks :  
The examination will be held in the main building. Students will be examined individually by Olivier Michiels for the theoretical part and by his assistant for the practical part.
Students may bring their codes. Cross-references between legal provisions are allowed. The student may highlight passages and use post-it notes.
