| CLIM0014-1 | Programming in service of climatology (part 1)

| Duration : | 15h Th, 30h Pr |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Xavier Fettweis |
Language(s) of instruction :

| French language |
Course contents :
| The lectures introduce the programming language Fortran used in most of the climate and weather forecast models. The tutorials are made one the operating system Linux on which the climate models run. Only the elements of Fortran/Linux used in climatology will be teach. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| The lectures aim to familiarize the students to some computer tools (Linux, Fortran) used to process the climate data and, to run and analyze the climate models. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| Good knowledge in climatology and mathematics. It is not needed to know the programming to do this course. |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| The exercises asked every week will be mainly do during the tutorials where the teacher will be present to help the students. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| This course is based on the concept "project-based learning" i.e. every week, the student has to resolve a programming exercises for the next week. The theoretical basis will be teach in the previous lecture. |
Recommended or required readings :
| Reference articles are presented to the students during the first lesson.
The pdf files of the lecture slides are available for the students on http://www.climato.be/cours |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| Each student has to resolve on his computer a small problem using Fortran on Linux
Three evaluated exercises (2h) will be proposed to the students as well as a mock exam (4h). The ones will be taken into account as bonus in the final evaluation. |
