Course contents :  
The course first provides a survey of the main trends in film analysis from the 1960s until the present day, through various approaches (semiology, narratology, psychoanalysis, aesthetics, history of art, anthropology, sociology, ideology, etc.). Next we focus on methodologies and on the three stages, namely description, analysis, and interpretation.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Film analysis being the common practice of all those who intend to work in the field of cinema the point of this course is to provide a theoretical and methodological framework as well as necessary conceptual tools.

Compulsory reading: Jacques AUMONT et Michel MARIE, L'Analyse des films, Paris, Nathan, 1995.
Assessment methods and criteria :  
An oral presentation during the year, a written file to be handed in by the end of the year, and an oral examination.
