- Practical aspects of chromatography (Gas liquid chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography). - Optimisation and measurement of performances, modern instrumentation and column description. Application to the chromatographic analysis of natural molecules . - Extraction and purification procedures in organic analysis including adsorption chromatography ; description of modern sampling methods for volatile products (VOCs): hydrodistillation procedures, headspace techniques,SPME; Solid phase extraction - Chiral chromatography.Multidimensionnal separations (seminar) - Application of hyphenated techniques to the study of biomolecules. - Case studies.
- Practical use of chromatographic tools
Learning outcomes of the course :
The applied organic chemistry course focuses on modern extraction, purification and identification methods of organic molecules from complex biological systems with special emphasize to chemical characterization, chromatographic and sampling techniques
After completing the course the student is expected to
- describe and argue about sampling and purification of the organic molecules;
- understand the different techniques (chemical analysis, derivatization, chromatography,...) for the characterization of the analytes as well as use state of the art chromatograhic methods;
- be able to discuss case studies including the theoritical aspects of the course.
