CHIM0636-1  Macromolecular physical chemistry

Duration :  30h Th
Number of credits :
Master in Chemical Sciences, in-depth approach, 1st year4
Master in Chemical Sciences, didactic approach, 1st year4
Master in Chemical Sciences, specialized approach, 1st year4
Master in Chemical Sciences4
Lecturer :  Christine Jérôme
Language(s) of instruction :
English language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, examination in June
Course contents :
This course comprises three important aspects of macromolecular physico-chemistry,i.e. macromolecular engineering, study of macromolecules properties in solution and at the solid state.
The synthesis techniques include: - anionic polymerization of acrylates - controlled radical polymerizations (by atom-transfer (ATRP), mediated by nitroxide (NMP), by reversible addition-fragmentation transfer(RAFT)) - emulsion polymerization
Solution properties of macromolecules are described together with several methods of determination of molecular weight.
Finally, the properties at the solid state are studied (Tg,...)
Learning outcomes of the course :
mastering the basic concepts of the recent methods of controlled polymerizations allowing to suggest and discuss synthetic pathways for complex macromolecules (copolymers), including the knowledge of their advantages and limitations and the new materials that can be achieved.
mastering of the molecular mass determination techniques based on the understanding of the behavior of macromolecules in solution
understanding of the behavior of a polymer material at the solid state, in function of the temperature, exploitation of experimental data to select a material for a given application
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Basic course introduction to macromolecular chemistry (3rd BAC Prof. C. Jérôme)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
- lectures on general concepts with demonstration experiments
- demonstration to small groups of the use of scientific equipments availale in the lab
- exploitation of experimental data based on problems solving
- exploitation of the scientific literature in individual work on a specific topic
- one training lecture is organized at the end of the course
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face and individual works
Recommended or required readings :
A copy of the slides is availble
Scientific papers are suggested during the lectures
Assessment methods and criteria :
Written and oral exams.
