| CHIM0605-2 | Chemistry and inorganic materials

| Duration : | 30h Th |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Bénédicte Vertruyen |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the second semester |
Course contents :
| Part 1: Structure and bonding in inorgnaic solids
Part 2: Introduction to the synthesis of inorganic solids
An introduction to X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy is included.
The course matter is illustrated by numerous exercices. The pratical sessions connected to the course are part of course CHIM0681-1 "Combined chemistry laboratories" |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| At the end of the course, students will be able to:
· understand and use the theoretical and practical concepts involved in structural inorganic chemistry;
· understand and explain the mechanisms involved in synthesis processes of inorganic solids;
· analyse synthesis procedures reported in the literature.
In addition, laboratory sessions in small groups (course CHIM0681-1) will help the students in developing more general skills, such as : team working, problem solving, finding information in technical literature, critical analysis of experimental data, oral and writing skills. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| - introductory chemistry course
- binary phase diagrams |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| The theoretical course is complemented by exercices. In addition, one session is organised so that students can get hands-on experience of crystallography software.
Practical sessions are included in course CHIM0681-1 but oral presentations of the results of the lab work are organized during a lecture. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| face to face |
Recommended or required readings :
| The following documents are available :
- copy of powerpoint slides
- list of problems
- list of equations
- list of keywords |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| - final exam : 90 %
- oral presentation of lab results : 10 % |
