CHIM0605-2  Chemistry and inorganic materials

Duration :  30h Th
Number of credits :
Bachelor in engineering (Bachelor in engineering sciences, civil engineer orientation), 3rd year3
Master in Chemical Engineering and Materrial Sciences, research focus, 1st year3
Master in Chemical and Material Sciences, specialized approach, 1st year3
Lecturer :  Bénédicte Vertruyen
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
Part 1: Structure and bonding in inorgnaic solids
Part 2: Introduction to the synthesis of inorganic solids
An introduction to X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy is included.
The course matter is illustrated by numerous exercices. The pratical sessions connected to the course are part of course CHIM0681-1 "Combined chemistry laboratories"
Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
· understand and use the theoretical and practical concepts involved in structural inorganic chemistry; · understand and explain the mechanisms involved in synthesis processes of inorganic solids; · analyse synthesis procedures reported in the literature. In addition, laboratory sessions in small groups (course CHIM0681-1) will help the students in developing more general skills, such as : team working, problem solving, finding information in technical literature, critical analysis of experimental data, oral and writing skills.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
- introductory chemistry course
- binary phase diagrams
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The theoretical course is complemented by exercices. In addition, one session is organised so that students can get hands-on experience of crystallography software. Practical sessions are included in course CHIM0681-1 but oral presentations of the results of the lab work are organized during a lecture.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
face to face
Recommended or required readings :
The following documents are available :
- copy of powerpoint slides - list of problems - list of equations - list of keywords
Assessment methods and criteria :
- final exam : 90 %
- oral presentation of lab results : 10 %
