Course contents :

| To give students the necessary knowledge to use the following methods and skills:
- Preparation of samples: extraction by an immiscible solvent (LLE); solid phase extraction; extraction of solid matrices (mineralisation, extraction by supercritical CO2).
- Capillary electrophoresis: principal characteristics of CE; Principle of electrophoresis, theory, electrophoretic mobility, electro-osmotic flow apparatus.
- Mass spectrometry: General considerations, ionisation techniques, Mass analysers, Mass spectrometry in tandem mode (MS/MS), Coupling of mass spectrometry with chromatography.
- Notions of analytical methodology (Chemometrics): Analysis of data; Experimental planning; Validation. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
 |
| To build on the required theoretical concepts with a view to instrumental analysis. To contribute to the general education of future pharmacists on a theoretical level in order to enable them to adopt an analytical approach to work. Teaching is centred on fundamental problems and those encountered in the analysis of medicines (Life cycle of analytical methods). To encourage an analytical and critical approach to work. To deal with the different aspects connected to the experimental planning process and the validation of instrument analysis techniques. (Analytical methodology). |

| Preparatory chemistry for biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences.
Biostatistics.
Physical and mathematical basis for biomedical sciences.
Physical basis of spectroscopic methods of analysis.
Introduction to analytical chemistry (Part I). |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
 |
| In the context of the life-cycle of analytical procedures, the course is completed by integrative seminars (PHAR2019-1) on pharmaceutical compounds (active ingredients and excipients). |

| Face-to-face.
Theoretical classes take the form of lectures. Casses take place on Monday mornings (8.30am - 10am) during the second term (Q6). |

| Theoretical courses:
Written exam on the subjects defined by the teaching and scientific staff: Written exam.
Oral re-sit if marks are insufficient in the written exam (only in the first session). |

| Training possibility.
Student-teachers: possibilities are offered for students interested in teaching analytical chemistry. The tasks consist of the supervision of practical work.
Research: outside the course or exam period (from the end of the 2nd year of the Baccalaureat), motivated students may attend a course in the laboratory (student-researchers). At the end of the course, it is possible to do a PhD in the department. |
