Course contents :  
This course aims at strengthening the notions of organic chemistry acquired during the two previous years of the curriculum through the study of two new majors chapters of modern organic synthesis: the first one is devoted to organometallic chemistry and its applications in homogeneous catalysis, while the second one focuses on pericyclic reactions and their stereoelectronic implications.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
At the end of the first part of this course devoted to organometallic chemistry, students should be able:
  • to calculate the number of valence shell electrons in an organometallic complex and to propose a plausible geometry for its structure,
  • to predict the evolution of various physico-chemical properties of ligands and organometallic complexes according to their structures,
  • to decompose a stoichiometric or catalytic process involving organometallic complexes into elementary steps and to specify the nature of each of them,
  • to understand and to explain the catalytic activity of organometallic complexes in various important reactions of organic synthesis.
At the end of the second part of this course devoted to pericyclic reactions, students should be able:
  • to identify the main types of pericyclic reactions,
  • to understand and to apply the Woodward-Hoffmann rules,
  • to determine if a pericyclic reaction is thermally or photochemically allowed and to predict its regioselectivity and its stereoselectivity.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
The content of the courses Organic Chemistry I & II, given in the first and second bachelor in chemical sciences, respectively, is a prerequisite.
For a possible remediation, the following textbook is suggested: J. E. McMurry, Organic Chemistry, 8th Edition, Brooks Cole: Belmont, CA, 2012.
The knowledge of English is required.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Fifteen lessons of 120 minutes each will be given during the first quadrimester. Exercise sessions (15 h) and practical work (55 h) will complement and illustrate the theoretical course.
The laboratory sessions will provide a hands-on approach of the theoretical notions developed in the lessons and will allow students to discover specific experimental techniques related to organometallic chemistry (use of Schlenk glassware, drying of solvents, reactions under inert atmosphere,...).
Participation in practical work is mandatory. Any absence must be justified by a medical certificate or another appropriate document. For security reasons, access to the laboratory is allowed only to students in possession of a lab coat and a pair of goggles.

Assessment methods and criteria :  
The assessment will be based on:
  • the participation in practical work (20%)
  • a written examination (40%)
  • an oral examination (40%)
A written examination lasting 4 h will be organized during the january session. It will be followed on the same day or the day after by an oral examination. A periodic table of the elements will be supplied for both examinations. The consultation of any other document is not permitted during the examinations. With the possible exception of a non programmable calculator, the use of any electronic device (mobile phone, computer, notepad, camera,...)  is strictly prohibited during the examinations.
