| CHIM0219-1 | Industrial polymers

| Duration : | 15h Th |
| Number of credits : |
| Lecturer : | Christine Jérôme |
Language(s) of instruction :
| French language |
Organisation and examination :
| Teaching in the second semester |
Course contents :
| On the basis of actual examples, this course illustrates by lectures of several chemists of the polymer industry, industrial processes to synthesize these materials together with their applications fields in relation to their properties. These examples include natural polymers, polyurethane foams, polyethylene, pressure sensitive adhesives, intraocular lenses materials, glass fibers/polymer composites and the use of supercritical fluids in the field of polymer materials. |
Learning outcomes of the course :
| The objectives of this course are:
- put the student into contact with actual scientific problems of materials chemists of the industry.
- make understand the relationships between structure, properties and applications that drive the development of novel polymer materials
- train or enrich English knowledge in this field. |
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
| Basic knowledges in polymer physico-chemistry, i.e. lectures "Chimie des macromolécules" (CHIM 0636) and "Polymer physico-chemistry" (CHIM 0219) |
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
| Two visits of industrial plants are included in this course in order to immerse the student in the industrial reality. |
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
| Based on slides given to the students before, the indusrial speakers present their every day reality in terms of chemical aspects, focusing on the structure and properties of their materials in relation to the developed applications. Then, a discussion starts based on students questions. |
Recommended or required readings :
| A copy of the slides (mainly in English) of each speaker is available at the beginning of the course |
Assessment methods and criteria :
| The student will have to give a short talk in English summarizing one of the industrial themes of the course and to answer a few general questions about it. |
Work placement(s) :
| |
Organizational remarks :
| Taking place between February and May, the course includes:
5 lectures (2 Hours each) given at the University by 5 invited speakers from the industry.
2 lectures (2 Hours each) given on industrial sites (mostly on the "Parc scientifique" of the Sart-Tilman (reachable by foot or bus) including the visit of the plant. |
