Academic year 2014-2015Value date : 12/05/2015
CHIM0015-3  Analytical chemistry II, physical methods

Duration :  30h Th, 60h Pr
Number of credits :
Master in Chemical Engineering and Materrial Sciences, research focus, 1st year6
Master in Chemical and Material Sciences, specialized approach, 1st year6
Lecturer :  Gauthier Eppe
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, examination in June with partial in January
Course contents :
Introduction to quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), Validation of analytical methods Electrochemical methods of analysis. Basic Concepts; potentiometry, membrane electrodes ; electrolysis, coulometry, polarography: classical, differential and anodic stripping; amperometry. Introduction to mass spectrometry and hyphenated techniques GC-MS and LC-MS
Spectral methods of analysis. General devices: sources of light, dispersive systems and FourierTransform systems, detectors. Emission spectrometry: flame, ICP and ICP-MS. Atomic absorption. Molecular, UV-Visible and Infra-red absorption. Raman scattering. X-rays spectroscopy. Comparison and application of the various methods.
Learning outcomes of the course :
To present with some details, the most current methods of analysis, based on physical processes. The aspect mainly developed is the quantitative aspect with an introduction to Quality assurance. This course however does not approach NMR, matters which belong to other courses.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Good knowledge of the basic concepts of electrochemistry, atomic and molecular spectroscopy
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
See below
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Theoretical courses (30h): 1st semester. Face to face. Copies of lecture slides are available
Recommended or required readings :
- Full notes are available for the electrochemistry part and the spectral methods of analysis. They present the basic concepts which will be exposed. - Moreover, the course is presented via a powerpoint in French and English provided to the students. - The students can obtain additional information, in particular in the excellent work: ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY by SKOOG, WEST and HOLLER, DeBoeck Université, (1997)
Assessment methods and criteria :
The evaluation includes: 1) a written interrogation in January with possible exemption on the whole topics presented 2) a general examination in June (one hour of written preparation followed by an oral defense). The distribution of the scores on the final score is as follows: -70% for the examination: 1/3 for electrochemistry, 2/3 for the physico-chemical part. -30% for the laboratory work.
Work placement(s) :
Training in local industry The laboratory works are carried out during a training course within a local industry, at the beginning of the second semester, at a rate of two days per week during 5 weeks. They are carried out by groups of two to four students and generally consist into developing an analytical method which is of interest directly to the industry. The results are summarized in a report, common to each group and are the subject of an oral presentation in presence of the industry people in charge.
