Academic year 2014-2015Value date : 12/05/2015
CHIB0004-1  Analysis techniques of natural macromolecules

Duration :  24h Th
Number of credits :
Advanced Master in Biotechnology and Applied Biology2
Lecturer :  Magali Deleu
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
All year long
Course contents :
1. Theoretical part  (8 hours): The course will first give a reminder of the structure of the major classes of biological macromolecules (proteins, oligosaccharides, DNA). Afterwards, the major spectroscopic techniques (UV, IR, NMR, MS coupled with HPLC and GC, X-ray diffraction, neutron spectrometry) useful to structural analysis and conformation of macromolecules will be exposed. The course will not be lost in the formalism of these techniques, but will concentrate on the practical aspects of them emphasizing the limitations and advantages of each of them depending on the type of molecules. It will also address other tools based on other principles such as local probe techniques (AFM, for example).
2. Practical part (10 hours): it will focus primarily on the study of specific cases in relation to research projects developed in the Department of Chemistry and Bio-industries. This part will be performed in the laboratory and will pay particular attention to the use of the tools available and coming in the department (UV, FT-IR, HPLC-MS, GC-MS, MALDI-TOF, NMR, fluorescence spectroscopy).
3. Part (6 hours): it will consist in the preparation and presentation of a literature review covering the use of one of the techniques close to a case of an industrial problem. To do this, the student will received books and reference articles in the field.
Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
* select from the different available techniques, which one(s) that fit(s) best to the situation encountered.
* discuss, at a basic level, the respective interests of the major spectrometric techniques in the study of the structure and / or conformation of macromolecules (UV, FT-IR, NMR, mass spectrometry and their various interfaces, fluorescence spectroscopy)
* to know the new developments in tools for structural characterization of biomolecules (AFM, neutron reflectivity ...) ...
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
