BIOL0821-1  Natural Biomaterials : ultrastructural and functional aspects

Duration :  30h Th
Number of credits :
Master in Biology of organism and ecology, in-depth approach, 2nd year3
Lecturer :  Philippe Compère
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the second semester
Course contents :
The course concern the organization of natural biomaterials, i.e. materials produced by living organisms. This organization is related to the physical/mecanical characteristics and their function in the living organisms. Owing that most of them are hierarchical biocomposites, their organization is regarded at the different levels : molecular, compositional, nanométric, micrometric, macroscopic and three-dimensional. At each level, the arrangement is responsible of a part of the properties.
The considered biomaterials are : arthropod exosqueletons, molluscan shells, sea urchin tests, bones, teeth, keratins,...)
Learning outcomes of the course :
Apprehend the characteristics, the composition and the strictural organiszation of biological matérials from a biological point of view (function in the organism, secretion by cells,...) and from a material science point of view.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Bachelor in Sciences and in Applied Sciences.
PhD students
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lectures
Guided personal work (litterature research and basic examination of a biomaterial)
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face
Recommended or required readings :
Assessment methods and criteria :
Oral examination
