BIOL0215-1  Cell physiology and animals histology

Duration :  30h Th, 20h Pr
Number of credits :
Bachelor in biological sciences, 2nd year4
Lecturer :  Jean-Christophe Plumier, Marc Thiry
Coordinator :  Marc Thiry
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
Part A: Histology

1. The epithelial tissues
2. Glandular epithelia
3. The connective tissues and the cartilage
4. Bone tissue
5. Muscles
6. Nervous tissue and blood

Part B: Cell Physiology

1. Ionic exchanges

2. Cell communications

3. Muscle contraction
Learning outcomes of the course :
The main aim are : To study the relationships between the structure and the functions of cells To give a general view of the structure of animal tissues To emphasize how the organisation of the tissues confirm their functions To explain mechanisms involved in perception and emission of messages between cells To study molecular mechanisms of muscle contraction
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Basic notions in cell biology
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Pratical work in cell physiology (ion transports, muscle contraction) is offered. Written reports are requested.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
The theorical courses in histology are given in the first quadrimester, on Monday from 9 am to 11 am, in the Great Hall of practical work (1st floor) of the Institute of Zoology (Bldg. I1, quai Van Beneden 22 in Liege). Each theorical course is followed in the same room with a sesion of practical work where students examine different histological preparations illustrating the course.
The theorical portion of the course in Cell physiology is given on Thursday (Week 2-5). The Hands-on portion of the course takes place on Thursday PM (week 6-14) at the institute of Botany (B22).

There is no reference textbook on cell physiology.
Assessment methods and criteria :
An oral exam will focus on the entire matter of cell physiology and animal histology course (including practical works). The exam will consist of three questions, one of which will be the identification of a histological preparation.
