Course contents :
|
| The theoretical course is articulated on three parts from the main central theme: unicity of life, and diversity of living organisms.
First part: Main life processes (chemical composition, cell structure and physiology, cell multiplication and genetics). Common animal organisation (tissues, organs and systems).
Second part: Origin of life. Evolution and phylogeny. Diversity of (mainly) animals (metazoans).
Third part: Some ecology aspects.
Practicals are organized in 8 afternoons (3.5 h), following theory. Developped themes are: Use of microscope and cell structure - Cell energetics (photosynthesis and respiration) - Reproduction cycles - Genetics - Arthropods' anatomy - Molluscs' anatomy - Sediments and pedofauna - Animal biodiversity.
These sessions will be completed by a one-day field trip devoted to some ecological aspects (to be defined). |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| To present an overview of the different aspects of Biology to students in Geology and Geography. Stressing the unicity of Life, and the diversity of extant and fossil organisms which live in the (palaeo-)ecosystems that they will study. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| A good knowledge of French language.
Biological scientific vocabulary is mainly derived from Greek and/or Latin roots. Having studied one (or both) this (these) language(s) during secondary school is obviously an advantage.
A lexicon with the most common roots will be provided. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
| Evaluation (end of Q2) includes both a theoretical and a practical examination.
The global evaluation, discussed in deliberation, will take into account both these parts (with respective share 50-50%), and the active participation of the student to laboratory sessions. Remind that presence to practicals is mandatory. |

| Theoretical courses will take place (normally, to be confirmed) in the Institute of Geography (B11, room Sporck).
Practicals will be given at the Institute of Zoology (I1), 1st floor, room to be specified. |
