Teaching in the first semester, examination in June
Course contents :
This course provides a summary of the Plant & Animal Biology courses on the schedule of 1st and 2nd BAC in Biology. The aim is to provide basic knowledge to students who followed a different cursus so that they are able to understand the other Biology courses on their program, common to the 3rd BAC in Biology.

Animal

The course presents the major systematic groups of animals considered in terms of evolution, phylogeny and biodiversity. The lecture is focused on compared anatomy, functional adaptations, evolutionary aspects and interactions with the environment.

Plant Biology

The course consists in two main parts.
Part one is based on 3 keywords (the title of the course) : 'Biology', 'Plant', 'Pluricellular'. These words are used as a guideline to explain the specific traits of plant cells, tissues, and organs. Functional aspects are included such as photosynthesis. Part two describes important groups such as algae, mosses, ferns, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. Special emphasis is laid on evolutionary aspects of vegetative organisms and reproduction.

Learning outcomes of the course :
The aim of this course is to provide basic knowledge in Biology, so that students can follow the 3rd BAC in Biology.

Animal

Introduction to the methods and scientific vocabulary of biology
Concepts of evolution and animal phylogeny
Overview of animal diversity

Plant Biology

The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge in plant biology, so that students can understand the course of Plant Physiology that is on their schedule for the second quadrimestre.

None

Animal

None
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Lectures and practicals

Animal

4 practical courses. The following topics will be studied : Nematods (Ascaris) - Annelids (earthworm) ; Arthropods ; Biodiversity (museum).

Plant Biology

Practicals: 4 afternoons on plant cell, photosynthesis, plant anatomy and reproduction.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face teaching. Ninety-minute lectures scheduled on Mondays p.m.., first quadrimester.
