Academic year 2014-2015Value date : 12/05/2015
BIOC0720-1  Structure of biological macromolecules

Duration :  15h Th, 20h Pr, 5h Mon. WS
Number of credits :
Advanced Master in Nanotechnology4
Lecturer :  Paulette Charlier
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
The different experimental steps that will lead to the image of a biomolecule using the technique of X-ray diffractionby monocrystal will be described. Three examples illustrating the relations structure-function will be approached, on the basis of research articles describing structural analysis of different proteins illustrating the following 3 families: - proteins controlling the DNA transcription, - serine proteases, - membrane proteins.
Learning outcomes of the course :
This course gives to the future biochemists the bases necessary to understand the principles of determination of 3D structures by X-ray crystallography in order to enable them to make an objective use of the crystallographic models.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Course of physics of 1st cycle. Basic knowledge in X-ray crystallography and knowledge of the basic principles of the structures of proteins.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
This lecture will be given in a classical form, including the use of a PowerPoint presentation, a chalk and a black board.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Recommended or required readings :
CD rom including Lectures powerpoint presentations, research articles, PDB files and tutorials will be available. Reference books : - "Crystallography made hook clear: With guide for users for macromolecular models." Scale Rhodos, Academic Press 2000 - "Introduction to Protein Structure" Carl Branden and John Tooze, Garland Publishing 1999 CD roms: - PS ² and Kinemage Supplement to "Introduction to Protein Structure" Carl Branden and John Tooze, Garland Publishing 1999
Assessment methods and criteria :
A written or oral exam will be organized.
