Course contents :  
Introduction to the chemistry of living organisms: structural and dynamic aspects.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
General introduction to the properties of living matter at the molecular level. 1. Organic chemistry
2. Life strategy. The living cell.
3. Conservation and use of the genetic information. DNA, RNA and protein synthesis. Mutations, heredity and genetic engineering
4. Protein structure.
5. Biological macromolecules structure determianation by Cristallography.
6. The functions of proteins.
7. Energy cycle. Energy and metabolism: glycolysis and photosynthesis.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
General chemistry.
Chemical thermodynamics.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
- Exercises : organic chemistry applied to living matter
- Tutorials dedicated to the Pymol software use: obseravtion and analysis of biological macromolecules structures. Courses illustration. Use of PDB database.
- Solving of a protein structure in silico on the basis of X-ray diffraction data.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :  
15- 4hr periods each comprising 2 hrs of theory and 2hrs of practicals

The PowerPoint presentations of the theoretical course will be available on CD as well as the notes of practical works.
