Seminars on microbiology and infectiology, 2nd year

En construction

Seminars on hematology, 2nd year

Methods used for the diagnosis of hematology diseases in the clinical laboratory.

Seminars on medicamentous toxicology, 2nd year

Specific cursus on chromatographic methods in a clinical, forensic and environmental toxicology department.
The students will stay for a 2 - 3 monthes in the lab and participate to technical validations, protocol signatures, etc....

Biostatistics II, 2nd year

This course is the second part of the teaching of Biostatistics at the Faculty of Medicine. It addresses mre advanced statistical methods, such as regression, one-way and two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), contingency tables and non-parametric statistical techniques.

Each lesson consists of a theoretical exposition of the method followed by a session of practical applications, where the student will get used to solve statistical problems encountered in daily practice.

Multivariate statistical analysis, 2nd year

The course is a general introduction to the descriptive methods and tests used in multivariate statistics, i.e. the study of several variables simultaneously. The course entails the following chapters:

- Short review of matrix calculus

- Graphical display of multivariate data

- Mean vector and dispersion matrix

- Principal component analysis

- Multiple regression and correlation

- Logistic and ordinal regressions

- Survival curves and Cox regression

- Discriminant analysis

Learning outcomes of the course :
Seminars on microbiology and infectiology, 2nd year

En construction

Seminars on hematology, 2nd year

1. Hematology analyzers: instrumentation, detection principles, validation and quality assurance.
2. Immunophenotyping: numeration of lymphocyte sub-populations, numeration of hematopoietic progenitor cells, phenotyping of hematological malignancies. Theory and practical cases.
3. Hemostasis: testing methods, validation and quality assurance of coagulation assays. Monitoring of anticoagulant treatment. Point-of-care testing. Practical cases.

Biostatistics II, 2nd year

The course is intended to improve and enhance the use of biostatistics in health sciences, by insisting on statistical reasoning and problem solving rather than on the mathematics and the complexity of formula. Students should be able to carry out an in-depth statistical analysis of a dataset resulting from an experiment or a survey, in particular with respect to the thesis they will prepare later on in their cursus.

Multivariate statistical analysis, 2nd year

The course is an introduction to the methods of multivariate data analysis. At the end of the course, the sudent should be capable of defining a multivariate problem, analysing the data and interpreting the results. He/she should also be able to understand the use of multivariate methods in the scientific literature.

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Seminars on microbiology and infectiology, 2nd year

First-year course

Seminars on hematology, 2nd year

General Hematology.

Biostatistics II, 2nd year

Students should have received the course "Biostatistics I" or some equivalent statistical course.

Multivariate statistical analysis, 2nd year

A good knowledge of univarite statistical methods.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
Seminars on microbiology and infectiology, 2nd year

Interpretation of clinical cases and comments upon scientific papers Ex-cathedra courses (specific topics)

Seminars on hematology, 2nd year

Ex cathedra lessons. Discussion of clinical cases.

Biostatistics II, 2nd year

Total: 15 hours
In statistics, practice is most important. Students are therefore requested to attend the practicals. These will be scored and taken into account in the final score of the exam.
Practicals will start on Thursday 8 November 2012 at the Mathematic Institute, usually from 16h30 to 18h30. The last session will be on 13 December 2012.
Please take with you your lecture notes, exercise book, pocket calculator and a pad

Multivariate statistical analysis, 2nd year

The practical sessions consist in analysing mulltivariate datasets by means of the software package Statistica.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Seminars on microbiology and infectiology, 2nd year

Interpretation of clinical cases (Tutorial groups)
Ex-cathedra short courses on specific topics Review of scientific papers

Seminars on hematology, 2nd year

Face-to-face lessons.

Biostatistics II, 2nd year

The course will start on Thursday 8 November 2012 at 14h00 at the Auditorium 01 of the Mathematic Institute (Bldg B37, Pkg P32). In general, the course lasts until 16h30 with 10-15 break. The last course will be on 13 December 2012.

Multivariate statistical analysis, 2nd year

Each course consists of 1h30 of theory and 1h of exercises with Statistica. One lecture will be dedicated to Statistica (the corresponding manual has also to be acquired for 10 EUR). The homeworks can be completed at home by the student.

Recommended or required readings :

Biostatistics II, 2nd year

Students will have to buy the lecture notes "Biostatistics, A. Albert, edition 2012" at Point de Vue shop near the large lecture halls at the cost of 15 EUR. This book contains the course material as well the main statistical tables. It will be used during exercise sessions and at the final examination. Finally, it can be used as a reference book in biostatistics in subsequent years.

NB. Students who bought the Biostatistics lecture notes in 1.Bachelor year can use it!
