Course contents :

| The internship is a substantial individual project that must be accomplished in a private company, in Belgium or abroad. To obtain 8 crédits, its duration has to be of minimum 40 working days. The subject is generally proposed by a private company and approved by an advisor who must be an academic member or a permanent researcher. For each internship an agreement must be signed and be giving to the academic advisor before it begins. |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| The goal of the internship is to prepare the student to his/her future career in a private company by discovering a professional environment in relation with chemistry, material sciences, biotechnologies, pharmaceutical industries (...). The student will have to prove that (s)he can carry out a substantial project based of his/her theoretical and practical knowledge and social skills. |

Assessment methods and criteria :
|
| The evaluation is first based on the report written by the student. The maximum length is fixed at 30 pages. Annexes are authorized.
The suggested structure is as follows:
1. Introduction (context of the work, the company, state of the art, objective of the work, ...)
2. Materials and method section (experimental methods, software, methodology, ...)
3. Results presentation, analysis and discussion (criticial analysis of the results, comparison with the literature, modeling, ...)
4. Conclusions and perspectives (contributions and perspectives).
In the case of the company asks for an extensive report longer than 30 pages, the student will have to make a second short specific report in view of the oral defence, adapting the proposed structure.
The defense by the student is oral and public. It consists of an oral presentation (15 minutes), a question/answer session (10 minutes), and is followed by a short deliberation. This presention is made before an academic jury composed of the advisor and the internship coordinator. This latter will choose a second academic member when being an advisor as well.
The final grade takes account the évaluations made by:
- the industrial advisor: evaluation relative to the prestations realized and the written report
- the academic jury: evaluation base on the quality of the written report and the quality of the oral defence. |

Work placement(s) :
|
| The internships coordinator gathers subjects from companies and propose them to the students, with suggestion of an academic advisor. A student can also make a proposal, but it must be approved by an academic advisor. The internship can start as soon as the student has finalized his/her registration, for example during the summer holidays. Abroad internship can be realized outside holidays periods. |
