ARCH2017-3  Design and public areas planning

Duration :  20h Th, 40h Pr, 1d FW, 60h Proj.
Number of credits :
Advanced Master in Urban and Regional Planning5
Master in Architecture and Engineering, research focus, 2nd year5
Lecturer :  Philippe Hanocq
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
The course aims to :
  • Analyze the contemporary practices guiding the design of public places in Western countries (Europe, USA) ;
  • Find out some principles of design and some guides for the implementation of projects on such spaces ;
  • Become acquainted with the procedures of public procurement contracts and with the technical aspects of a public space construction project ;
The course consists of :
  • A theoretical class approaching the following aspects :
1 Evolution of the practices on the public realm from the XIXth century till now ; 2 Contemporary practices of design under the constraints of important factors that are :   A The mobility and the accessibility ;   B The safety and the security (accidentology and criminology) ;   C The environmental and landscaped quality ;   D The urban commoditisation and the privatization of some open spaces. 3 Principles of sizing of the road's network : streets, crossroads, and diverse ;. 4 Notions of public procurement contracts and constitution of a construction documentation.
  • A practical class in which the student will be confronted with the elaboration of a construction documentation case in the common frame of a standard service procurement contract. These graphic and literal documents are about :
1 the design of the space ; 2 the sizing of the constituent elements of the construction project ; 3 the technical aspects of the implementation: plans and details of execution, technical specifications, measurement documents.
Learning outcomes of the course :
At the end of the class, the student will be able to :
  • understand the contemporary notion of urban public space in all its complexity ;
  • design and pre-size the main component elements of a public space ;
Furthermore, the student will have at disposal the information allowing to elaborate a common construction documentation for works on the public space, within the frame of a standard service procurement contract in the Walloon region.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
Basic principles about urban design, use of usual CAD and other graphic tools.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The course is made of :
  • Lectures illustrated with numerous Belgian and foreign examples (theoretical part).
  • A site visit for analysing one or several best cases, in connection with the theme choosed for the compulsory practical exercise.
  • Some simple exercises of capacity and pre-sizing calculation, realized individually during the class ;
  • The elaboration of a common construction documentation, (studio working in groups of 3 to 4 students). This exercise will give the opportunity to the students to become acquainted with the manipulation of common or specialized computing tools : CAD softwares (AUTOCAD, ...) and other graphic tools (Illustrator, ...), Walloon standard technical specifications (Qualiroutes), Walloon standard computer-aided measurement tool (MAO)

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Face-to-face lectures (theoretical class).
The practical class will be given to small autonomous groups, under the shape of studios. More details will be given in the beginning of the class.
Recommended or required readings :
Notes (synthesis of the lectures) are available to the teacher.
Assessment methods and criteria :
Evaluation:
  • The practical class (elaboration of a construction documentation case). Will be considered : the interest of the general design, the design and the sizing of the constituent elements of the construction project, the quality of the technical aspects of this documentation. The exercise has to be handed before the Christmas holidays. It accounts for 60 % of the final quotation.
  • The theoretical class. An individual oral test during the session of January, allowing to verify the assimilation of the lectures. The interrogation accounts for 40 % of the final quotation.
Work placement(s) :
Organizational remarks :
Class on first 4-months period, on Friday morning from 8:30 till 12:30.
