ARCH2007-2  Environmental design of buildings in the context of sustainable development

Duration :  15h Th, 30h Pr, 2d FW, 40h Proj.
Number of credits :
Master in Architecture and Engineering, research focus, 1st year4
Master in Architecture and Engineering, specialized approach, 1st year4
Lecturer :  Anne-Françoise Marique, Sigrid Reiter
Coordinator :  N...
Language(s) of instruction :
French language
Organisation and examination :
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Course contents :
This course on environmental design of buildings includes a theoretical part and an architectural project.
This course teaches principles of sustainable development, principles and techniques of environmental buildings and different methods for evaluating the environmental quality of buildings.
The course content includes :
- the concept of sustainable development, - sustainable development principles applied to architecture, - principles of buildings environmental design, - how to reduce energy consumption and to produce renewable energy in buildings, - environmental water management, - criteria for selecting environmental construction materials, - waste management, - quality of the indoor environment (comfort, health), - the method HQE (High Environmental Quality) and a few other methods for evaluating the environmental quality of buildings. -the method "Sustainable neighbourhoods" and a few other methods for evaluating the sustainability of neighbourhoods. -Life Cycle Assessment of buildings
These skills will be tested in practice through a design project of an environmental building. This exercise will be conducted in collaboration with the students of the "Ecole des Mines d'Alès" (France)
Two days of fieldworks provide opportunities for students to discover issues of real architectural projects.
Learning outcomes of the course :
The course objectives are:
- Understanding the issues and principles of sustainable development in architecture and urban design.
- Learning the principles and techniques of buildings environmental design.
- Knowing the method HQE, its advantages and gaps compared to other methods for evaluating the sustainability of buildings and neighbourhoods.
- Integrating these theoretical skills in a practical design project of an environmental building.
- Being able to choose the environmental technology best suited to each project.
Through the project, students will:
-discover other methods of design,
-develop their skills in project design.
-develop personal skills in terms of communication
At the end of the project, the student should be able:
- to choose wisely and to use environmental technology as part of an architectural project.
- to justify its architectural and technical choices and to defend their project.
- to question itself.
- to design architectural solutions that are respectful of the natural, social and economic environment.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :
None.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
The goal is to design an environmental building. This project is a unique educational experience : students from the University of Liege collaborate with students of the National School of Architecture of Nancy thanks to a Collaborative Digital Studio created by Lucid (University of Liège): a shared design environment.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :
Course : first semester, on Tuesday from 14 pm to 16pm. Project: Wednesday as part of the Collaborative Digital Studio.
Recommended or required readings :
The slides accompanying the oral presentation are available in pdf format.
Assessment methods and criteria :
The assessment focuses on:

- a written examination on the course (50%).

- a final presentation of the environmental
design project (50%).
