Course contents :
 |
| This course will sketch out a number of important elements for designing architecture, in the broadest sense of the term, and in particular will introduce students to the basics of architectural and spatial composition.
The course prepares students to the architectural studios, held during the next four years of their curriculum.
The course is structured accordingly around three themes:
- the analysis of existing architectural productions, providing students with directions for further reflection that will enrich their architectural culture and improve their ability to pursue critical analysis;
- several practical exercises oriented towards "projects" (case studies), providing the students with the opportunity to develop their own processes of project planning, and stimulate their creative autonomy;
- experimentation of tools to express architecture that enable students to develop their personal sensibility, their skills in graphically expressing their ideas and in communicating those ideas (with a particular focus on free-hand sketching and physical modeling). |

Learning outcomes of the course :

| At the end of this course, student will :
- manipulate the vocabulary and the basic grammar of architectonic composition, necessary to acquire tools for analysis and production of architectural spaces;
- improve one's ability to look, to observe, to stimulate vision in space, the meaning of perspective, the scale of proportions, three-dimensional vision;
- develop personal sensibility through formal approaches, supported by analysis and synthesis, grounded in the spirit of research, knowledge, and sensible transposition;
- express oneself, going from an idea toward its realization and verifying one's thinking by means of its material realization, to finally transmit it to others.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :

| Practical work sessions will be held in the architecture workshop room in building B52 at Sart-Tilman campus. |

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

| Face-to-face.
Courses are given in the form of theoretical sensibilisations, open discussions and practical work during which students are led to compose and to analyze architectural spaces for the first time.
Proactive participation from students in practical work sessions is essential.
Visits of various buildings and urban environments are organized during the year (two to three visits per year). |

Reading architecture journals is also essential for the students' acquisition of pedagogical objectives, as well as their participation in field trips, conferences or architecture exhibitions. |

Assessment methods and criteria :

| Grading in this course will be based on:
* work turned in during the year
* oral defense of the final project, in front of a jury
Any year-average grade under 10/20 opens access to the second session if and only if all other projects have been completed and turned in during the year. Students will be offered the opportunity to re-defend one project (chosen by the teacher), whose grade will replace the final project grade in the year-average grade.
Examination format
Oral defense of the final project, in front of a jury of experts, constitutes the examination. |
