Course contents :
This year, the theme of the seminar is the anthropology of animals, understood as the anthropology of human-non human relationships. The course is divided in three parts : 1- Setting the basis. The first part discusses the question of the "Great Divide" (Latour) between natural and social sciences. This is achieved through the presentation of historical and contemporary examples (the birth of the scientific study of animal behaviour, evolutionary psychology and how it naturalize the social world, etc.). This first aims also at getting students acquiainted to the explanatory models and thinking of the natural sciences. 2- To conceive the human / non human relationships. The second part presents examples of how animals might be and have been introduced in social sciences 3- Case studies. The last part of the course is devoted to the presentation of specific studies of human-animal interaction and communication systems. Methodological questions arise here.
Learning outcomes of the course :
Below the acquisition of new knowledge, the course aims at : - a better knowledge of the natural sciences's ways of thinking and explaining, in order to be able in the future to collaborate with natural scientists - be able to identify the epistemological implicit choices and ideological commitment that structure scientific theories (by the practice of reflexivity); - to question the commonsense human/animal frontier - to get some flexibility and relativism while learning about other concepts of nature and animals.
