Course contents :
 |
| Through an investigation of the bases of religious and political anthropology (the foundations of which will be covered in class), this course aims to clarify the complex relationship between the religious and political spheres. These complex relationships will be seen in the contemporary worlds using ethnographic examples. By focusing on field studies, this will involve identifying different forms of expression (sacred kingship, prophetic movements, independent churches, pentecostal-charismatic churches, therapeutic churches, neo-traditionalist churches, possession cults, witchcraft, political rituals, etc.). We will question the role played by the numerous religious movements in contemporary States, whether democratic or not, and the space which they occupy in the political and public spheres. We will seek to measure the contribution they make to new dynamics or whether they take the place of the state in times of crisis, deregulation or even dissolution. We will attempt to determine the political role which transnational and diasporic religious movements tend to play. |
