Course contents :  
The first half of the course will provide an introduction to visual anthropology. It will sketch an itinerary from the experiences of the first pioneers to the most recent developments of this discipline. Today, visual anthropology has expanded its disciplinary boundaries and has developed fruitful connections with the emerging field of media anthropology, in order to analyze different systems of media production, circulation and consumption.
The second half of the course will focus on a few specific case studies, and particularly on the analysis of video film production in sub-Saharan Africa (specifically in Nigeria, Ethiopia and Côte d'Ivoire) in order to study the history, specificities and recent developments of a phenomenon that is rapidly revolutionizing the landscape of African film production and consumption.

To introduce the students to the history and recent theoretical and methodological developments of visual anthropology
