Course contents :
|
| The consequences of aggressions (stress) on cells and tissues are studied: reversible injury, cell death by necrosis or apoptosis, tissue necroses, adaptation processes at the cell or tissue level, cell or tissue overloading.
Next, the subsequent reactions are discussed: inflammation, immunity, repair, healing.
The hypersensitivy reactions contribute to cell and tissue damage; some particular cases such as tuberculosis, graft rejection, auto-immune diseases are reviewed.
Vascular diseases as well as pathological conditions leading to thrombosis and embolism are studied and their consequences, ie. infarcts, are described.
The study of benign and malignant tumors include morphological features and biological properties as well as an overview on their etiology and pathogenesis. |

Learning outcomes of the course :
|
| Pathology is the study of diseases. The course of General Pathology aims at describing the lesions induced by aggressions and stress in cells and tissues as well as the reactions of the body. Besides, the course defines the aetiology and discusses the pathogenesis of the lesions.
General Pathology is complementary to Biochemical pathology and is the basis of comprehensive medicine; from aetiology to lesions through pathogenesis, this course introduces the study of the consequences of cell and tissue injury on the functions of the organs (physiopathology) and the expression of these consequences as diseases. |

Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :

| A good knowledge of the courses of Q2 and Q3 (particularly histology) is a prerequisite. |

Planned learning activities and teaching methods :
|
| Practical courses: 1) at the microscope; two sessions of two hours (30 to 40 students) preceded by an explanation lecture.
2) on-line auto-evaluation (multiple choice questions, based on concrete cases).
Modalities : Practical courses at the histology & pathology room (B36, niv -1, 4000 Sart Tilman); assistance mandatory and checked; no interrogation but appreciation on the participation to the evaluation on-line.

Written examinations for the theorical and practical parts (multiple choice questions, open question(s) with short answers). During the oral integrative examination, the students may be questioned on the general pathology course. |
