| The course will provide an introduction to the (white) literature of South Africa, taking into account the complex history of the place as well as the hopes and vexations induced by the passage of Apartheid. The following texts in particular will be considered:
J.M. Coetzee, Foe (1984)
Nadime Gordimer, The House Gun (1998)
Damon Galgut, The Impostor (2008). |

| The broader aim of the course is to familiarize the students with the texts and contexts of contemporary South Africa, and of course to expose them to tricky literary codes begging to be cracked. |
