Part 2 : Qualitative approach

The following concepts will be covered during the course:
Epistemology of qualitative research.
Objectives of qualitative research.
Qualitative method/quantitative method/mixed methods: how to choose?
Usefulness of the qualitative approach in public health research.
Indicators of quality in qualitative research.
Method of information gathering: Sampling-collection methods.
Analysis of data: general principles-encoding of data-thematic analysis-software programs to help with qualitative processing.
Learning outcomes of the course :  
Part 2 : Qualitative approach

General objectives
The course is an introduction to qualitative research methods. It aims to explain the advantages of a qualitative approach to public health and provide participants with the tools for gathering and processing qualitative information.
Specific objectives
Students will be capable of:
-arguing the case for the use of qualitative methods; -understanding the issues and objectives of
qualitative versus quantitative methods.
-composing a qualitative sample;
-designing an interview guide for information gathering by individual or group interview;
-conduct an individual or group interview;
-successfully complete a thematic analysis of qualitative data;
-critique a qualitative research article from quality criteria defined during the course.
Prerequisites and co-requisites/ Recommended optional programme components :  
Part 2 : Qualitative approach

Prerequisites: PISC I and PISC II, learning the transdisciplinary approach to public health problems.
Corequisites: course on the education of the patient.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods :  
Part 2 : Qualitative approach

The first sessions of the course will make it possible to set the theoretical basis for a qualitative research method. The main part of the course will be devoted to the concrete implementation of the techniques taught.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning) :

The theory course is given face-to-face. The practical part of the course will enable the students to work outside and at home before presenting the result of the reflective approach they will carry out in relation to their work.

There is no syllabus. A PowerPoint presentation on the subject matter will be available to students on the MY Ulg site.

Assessment methods and criteria :

Written work: assessment will be based on written work submitted by the students. It will be preceded by a group oral presentation set as part of the course programme so that students can adjust their documents based on feedback from their supervisors.
